The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Arrival

We have finally arrived at our camp in Yachana. Tomorrow we will begin our first aid and wildlife training to prepare us for our time in the fainforest. The magnitude of where we are is starting to sink in and every one seems excited.

The trip to camp was an adventure in and of itself. The bus took us on a winding path through the Andes, delivering one breathtaking view after another. It’s as if the mountains are bleeding waterfalls. After the bus we boarded a motorized canoe and started down the Napo River, giving us a much closer look at the forest we’d signed up to live in. The density of the vegetation is astonishing; vines growing on moss growing on trees, growing out of other trees. It’s a forest literally crawling over itself that we can’t wait to jump into.
