The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Butterflies

Photo: Cithaerias pireta by James Wright

This morning we set out to do a butterfly survey. We got out the nets and the ‘stinky fish’ butterfly bait and headed for a ridge about 45 minutes away. When we got there we set up the nets in a few different areas and waited. Soon enough we had several different species in the hanging nets. These tropical butterflies had strikingly vibrant colors. Among the newly found species were Methone cecilia , Janthecla sista, Celmia celmus and Lasaia pseudomeris We hadn’t previously seen these species on the Reserve. We’ve since added these new finds to the species list.
