The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Sustainable development @ Hector's island

We spent a total of three days at Hector’s Island, which was a welcome change of pace. Hector focuses on conservation of different species, mainly monkeys. He taught us a lot about indigenous groups and sustainability in the rain forest. When not showing us how to use spears, blow darts, or weave baskets, he was taking us on hikes of the island where he would mimic the calls of various animals flawlessly. Some of the monkeys we saw included Woollies, Tamarinds, Marmosets, Capuchins, and Squirrel Monkeys. We bath and cooled off by swimming in the Napo River at every opportunity. Feeling refreshed, we’re happy to be back in camp so we can get back to work on our own conservation efforts.
