The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

This week (6 out of 10) held host to the second benthic micro-invertebrate survey of the 10 week expedition. However, this time around we were lucky enough to have the help of 15 students from the Yachana Technical College. Led by EM Mark as part of his BTEC qualification, the first stream we approached was more of a small puddle after many days without rain. So, onwards and upwards deeper into the forest we ventured to Stream 1. After finding an appropriate stretch, the high school students and EMs proceeded with great enthusiasm in the task at hand - to collect benthic invertebrates from the stream to be identified and studied further. Armed with trap nets and trays, the task was accomplished, and a vast array of aquatic species was collected, including mayflies, damselflies and even a few (not so micro) fish! After a fun few hours splashing about collecting hundreds of samples, we returned back to camp to dry off and begin with the mammoth task of identifying all we had found. A big thanks to all the students who helped out!
