The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Sponsor a Step!

The weekends on base see the EMs with a little bit more free time and some of them use it to disappear off down to the swimming hole, or spend a bit more time on their BTECs, or practising their Spanish with the local students from the Yachana College. Often everyone mucks in with camp improvements, which are an on-going activity. The last weekend saw a fantastic team effort with putting in a new bit of walkway on arrival at the base. It involved a lot of sawing of very hard wood in hot and humid conditions. Everyone got involved and chopped their own section of the wood (laid out like railway tracks), once chopped, their names were engraved on it, by way of sponsoring their very own section of the walkway - very similar to the stars footprints in L.A! It was a successful day of camp improvements and a great sense of team achievement felt by all. Everyone can now reflect on their achievements on a daily basis, every time they walk on it!
