The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

In With The New

Although it was sad to see nine EMs head off away from the base, we got to welcome four new EMs at the five week stage. While the 10 weekers were on a long weekend in Banos, relaxing and rafting and taking a well earned break from base, four new arrivals joined us. Training week got underway with an Emergency First Response course, Introductions to the science programmes and a taster of some of the flora and fauna that they might stumble across here in the reserve. It was eerily quiet on base with only a handful of EMs to organise. We had a little visitor in the Comedor, a Wandering Spider (Phoneutria nigriventer) popped in to have a look at what was going on with the new arrivals, keeping an eye on them from above in the rafters. The quiet came to an end on the Monday afternoon when the long term EMs returned from their mid-phase break. They soon got back into the swing of surveys despite an unseasonal amount of rain. They began imparting their wisdom on the new recruits giving hints and tips on their time in the rainforest so far and imparting tipbits on what may be to come.
