The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

A Rousing Send Off!

It almost seems like just a few days ago when 18 clean, fresh smelling EMs arrived onto the GVI base in the Yachana Reserve on the banks of the Rio Napo. Now after five weeks and much fun, learning, discoveries and rain in the rainforest the slightly more damp and dirty group headed out towards Tena for one last canoe ride upstream to catch the three hour bumpy bus journey back to the little hostel where their adventures unfolded. They spent their last night together as a group and we bade a fond farewell to half of the EMs. In Tena they were greeted with celebrations. The whole town came alive and after a night of eating as much meat as they could handle (with not a vegetarian amongst the 18, it led to much pining for a big steak and they got their fill of it on their last meal). The group headed out to join the town's celebrations for the day of the Oriente (any excuse for a party for the locals!). There was a band playing in the main square and much dancing was had by all until the small hours of the morning. A deserved send off for all the hard work that the EMs had put in over the previous weeks.
