The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Go Team GVI!

More rain today and the satellite camp was put on hold again until the afternoon, eager volunteers waited, packed up with anticipation and waiting for a break in the weather. When the rain cleared up later in the morning the decision was made to leave for the sat camp at 2pm. Low and behold 1.30pm the rainforest gave forth again and halted sat camp once more.

Those volunteers not hoping for satellite camp, were heading over the river to Yachana at 2pm for milkshakes and the regular Sunday game of footy with the local high school. After sat camp was postponed for the day, all those lads (Chris, Andy, Glen and Max) quickly got changed into their footy kit , threw on a lifejacket and moments later were in a canoe heading up the Rio Napo towards Yachana. I would like to say every cloud has a silver lining but unfortunately GVI lost 10-9 to the local boys, after leading for the whole match. A rather disheartened, muddy group returned to camp having failed throughout the whole 10 weeks to beat the local high school. On the journey home there was however much debate over the score and who actually won this particular muddy battle– with such a high scoring game it’s understandable. Sunday league has always proved a successful day for lifting spirits and generally entertaining the masses – I guess it’s up to the new volunteers to pick up were these old boys have left off and to re-ignite the GVI winning spirit!
