The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

The Last Saturday on Base

Rain has been the theme of the last few days – well we are in the rainforest after all! Saturday began under another bulging raincloud but this was never going to stop the volunteers getting to Agua Santa (the local market village) to stock up on vegetable and beer supplies for the Saturday night social. Another luxury to be had in Agua Santa is a meal containing meat, a choice of chicken, beef or local fish. As there is very little meat option on camp, for those carnivores this comes as a real treat, as Matt one of our staff members, proved by wolfing down two meals in one sitting! Back at base, a special treat of Banoffee pie was wiped up using the girls’ secret recipe and the guys on camp duty cooked up a storm, preparing a feast of lentil and vegetable empanadas with fried plantain for the night ahead.

Everyone was rewarded with beers and entertainment from the Amy and Dan amateur dramatics! A play about life at base camp and the effects it can have on the unsuspecting volunteer! A brilliant rendition which called for an encore by the appreciative crowd and left them falling about with tears of laughter. A good day was rounded off by those with the energy chewing the fat around the camp fire and reflecting not only on the week’s events, but also the previous few months here in the Amazon.
