The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Superhero Wednesday!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s Superhero Wednesday! On Tuesday night the GVI team collected old clothes and equipment to create their costumes. That night they slept as mere mortals for the last time and awoke the night day as the GVI superheroes. It wasn’t all fun and games though. The superheroes had work to do. After a hearty breakfast of power porridge made by Moustache Beast and the Villain they were ready to tackle the day.

Up first was Kat Woman’s BTEC survey. Could she sift through all the sediment in the Amazon before lunch? For a while it was touch and go. Mighty Max did battle with a giant caddis fly. He was beginning to lose his will when “POW!” came a blow from Captain America and the caddis fly was defeated. Then, just when the superheroes thought it was safe to resume surveying, an evil snail leapt from the stream bed and tried to drag Kat Woman back to it’s lair. Luckily the combined forces of Spider Girl and Robin Reliant were no match for the slimy fiend and he was thrown back down into the icy waters of the stream forever.

Meanwhile in another part of the Amazon the super dung beetle team were at work with their beetle traps. Their mission was to find the hideouts of all the deadly species of dung beetle in the jungle. The sun was high and the heat was stifling. The dung beetles lay waiting in the undergrowth. One by one Firefox and Thunder Nat unearthed the beetles. Some lay still playing dead just waiting to pounce on the superheroes but Captain Dung Beetle could see through their act and thwarted their evil plans by taking them captive in his trusty Tupperware container.

After a day of much excitement you’d think our superheroes would need a break but not for Violaceous V and her super team of night walkers. After another fortifying feast from The Moustache Beast and The Villain, Violaceous V led her team into the dark abyss in search of some of the world’s deadliest amphibians. The dense black of the night was disorientating but the highly defined senses of Wolver has Been and the reckless risks taken by Captain Chaos to find the fiendish frogs prevailed. And so the day had been a success for the superheroes. They had managed to keep the world a safer place while keeping their capes immaculate. Never will the crazy critters of the jungle deep forget the incredible events of Superhero Wednesday.
