The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Pitfalls - Day Two

The pressure was on as Andy, Intern Dan, Allie Q, Lucy and Hassan embarked from GVI base camp at 0630 Wednesday morning. The pioneer pitfallers set the bar high on Day One and the second team hoped for a similar success. The warriors set out on the death march and it was not long before drama ensued - Hassan was maimed by a large Forest Crab and a team catches the end of an epic battle involving two wolf spiders, a mouse, a lizard and army of ants.

This is how it all went down according to Dan…. The mouse and the wolf spider fell into the pitfall. They began to battle and as the mouse was gaining the upper hand, the spider called for backup. When the other spider came to help the pair cornered the mouse and injected their venom. As the poison began to flow through his blood stream, the mouse, knowing that his death was imminent, got a second wind and bravely killed the evil spiders. The mouse died shortly thereafter, and then the ants, who had been watching the whole battle gladiator style, moved in for the feast of a life time! As the ants enjoyed their breakfast, the Common Forest Lizard, who was still intoxicated after heavy drinking, accidently fell into the pitfall. He quickly realized his drunken mistake, but it was too late. The ants smelled fresh blood and began to attack the lizard, then, out of know where, the hero, in the form of a crazy northerner (Andy), valiantly saved the lizard from what would have been a slow and horrible death!

Having done their good deed for the day, the team pressed on to check the remaining pitfalls. The Amphibian Gods smiled once again and the pitfallers tallied up a total of 16 frogs, one lizard, and six small mammals (unidentified). The numbers from the first two days of pitfalls were quite impressive and it appears as though all the efforts put into the hole digging and baffle building was without a doubt worthwhile. They expect to find more cool creatures in the up and coming eight days (and their fingers are crossed for a snake!).
