The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

A Weekend to Remember!

Saturday social night: Camp Olympics. Six events, two teams and one glorious night of triumph and bitter disappointment. Team CBIMG vs. team “Don AbDon” (aka DAD). In brief, the events included crawling, eating off floor and other people, beer, hip swinging and boys wearing bras! (On a side note, GVI male staff enjoyed bra wearing very much). Not your average Olympic events! Despite much contention, DAD won the night.

Sunday: a football game of muddy champions. GVI vs Ecuador (Yachana colegio). Prior to kick off, a torrential downpour in true rainforest style, saturated the pitch and persisted throughout the majority of the game. Against the onslaught of Ecuadorian flair, GVI countered with solid defending and – very fair – slide tackling. (Don’t worry the ball was always touched before proceeding to take out the player, which was unavoidable on the muddy slick that was the pitch). GVI could smell fear in the opposition. Again and again GVI heroically pushed forward with skill and tenacity and finally, to victory. History was made. Final score; 3 – 1, to the GVI crew. Victories are few and far between, but that makes them all the sweeter when they come to fruition!
