The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Ode to Two Weeks with GVI Amazon

Ten days in, our training complete,
We round off week one with a friendly meet:
Soccer against the Yachana boys.
Defeated, despite the large numbers employed!

Traps to be laid, surveys to be run,
But let’s not forget to have lots of fun.
Whilst trekking in rain, sharp eyes you should take,
For you too could spot a great-looking snake! *

Camp duties beckon, there’s a lot to fit in,
Like cooking and cleaning and emptying bins.
Great care should be taken when throwing out slops
But go wild with burnables - the best of the jobs!

Muddy damp washing piled up to our ears,
Lines full of wet stuff which never clears.
Jungle food carb-rich, some times dessert too:
This week Happy Birthdays to Natalie and Stu!

* A young rainbow boa Eddie did see.
Don Abdon handled, with photos a-plenty.
Against the red clay it was a good spot,
But poor Chris and Andy - they just missed the lot!
