The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Two week taster of the Amazon

As the first 2 weeker of GVI Ecuadorian Amazon expedition, I found this first week extremely interesting because it was a mix between training and talks and the first tastes of the projects being run by GVI in the Amazon. My status of “2 weeker” permitted me to go out in the field a lot this week, which was intense and hard work, but very enjoyable. With one or two fieldwork walks per day, two night walks and one sat camp the first week was busy and very sweaty! All the different activities allowed me to see so many things, including three different types of snakes, plenty of frogs, birds of prey, birds, lizards and also mammals such as the Aquatic Rat (Anotomys leander), Agoutis (genus Dasyprocta), Opossums and an amazing orange tail, probably belonging to a giant squirrel. As someone who loves their sleep, it was a tough week, mainly due to the early mornings, but once up and about everything was so cool.
