The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! How to Bake a Puerto Rican Party

Ingredients:
1. One community president

2. 19 volunteers and 6 staff members

3. Chris’s sports day planning
4. Ropes for 8-legged races
5. Wellies for welly-wanging (throwing)
6. Herb’s curries
7. Chris’s pineapple and peanut butter and jam empanadas
8. Andy’s coleslaw
9. Jas’s cookies
10. Rice (heaps)
11. Muscles for carrying everything to Puerto Rico
12. One football
13. One football field

Method:
Step 1.
Meet with el president of Puerto Rico to arrange party in the weeks before our final day on base.

Step 2.
Chris planning all our sports day races and competitions, including gathering the ropes for the 8-legged races and the wellies for welly wanging (throwing) competitions.

Step 3.
Jas, Andy, Chris and Herb all mixing ingredients to prepare an amazing feast of curries, rice and coleslaw, with cookies and empanadas for snacks.
Step 4. Sprinkle with a generous pinch of anticipation. Will the people of Puerto Rico come to our party? Will they like our sports day games?
Step 5.
Stir in the muscles of the volunteers and staff to carry all the requisite equipment and food 20 minut
es down the rocky road from GVI base camp to Puerto Rico football field.
Step 6.
Wait for people to arrive… Hoorah a really good turnout! Step 1 worked!
Step 7. Mix volunteers, staff, local school children and the local community into teams boosting morale and spirits high. Marinate for 3 hours.
Step 8. Ice with a game of football.
Step 9. Taste and add seasoning such as coke, fanta or sprite from the local store as necessary.
Step 10. Serve the party with a sauce of smiles and enjoyment!
