The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Conservation: Life After GVI Amazon

Having left Ecuador and GVI Amazon after 14 months of work, I began thinking about all the advice I had given to volunteers. Those of you who were present for some of my discussions will remember comments related to continuing to stay active within conservation after you return home from your travels and the jungle.

Well I have been back at my folks’ house in the North of England now for about five weeks whilst I stop off for before my next adventure. However, in the mean time I have been trying to do my little part that we discussed. In the past few weeks I have built and put up around my parents garden five bird nest boxes, three bat boxes and a rather large new spanking owl box, along with lots of bird feeders!

Already we have a robin nesting with eggs in one box and have seen a wealth of birds around the garden including, blue tits, goldfinch, greenfinch, dunnocks, blackbirds, wrens and jays. We even have a fox visiting us in the evenings too now ……. well so says guard dog Diesel!

I hope that this little snippet shows you guys that I’m doing my little bit back at home too and maybe those of you looking at coming to GVI Amazon in the future can even start before you get there.
