The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Is that a....?

There we were, walking back from an awesome butterfly walk in the rainforest. The sun was blasting down and we were eager to get back to camp for snack time! I was lagging behind as usual, when all of a sudden I hear screams and “yowzas” from the other three girls. I run forward to investigate and see a massive caiman just lounging on the road!

We were all so excited. Is it real?” “Is he alive?” “Why is he sitting in the middle of the road?” Before any more questions could be asked, ballsy Jenn steps up to catch the blighter, “I’ve wrestled alligators” she said or something along those lines - everyone was able to get a closer look at the fella and still came no closer to answering the question of what on earth it was doing on the road in the afternoon - all the same it was an amazing unexpected sighting to have on our ramble back to base from a butterfly survey.

It finally came for the caiman crew to watch the little fella as he scurried back into the rainforest and home in time for tea.
