The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Addict!

The idea of sweets didn't thrill me upon arriving in Ecuador. Back home I rarely indulge in sweets like chocolate or cookies, so the idea of going 5 weeks without them her on the GVI Amazon expedition didn't phase me... until I was introduced to the MANICERO! With it's large size, many peanuts and decadent chocolate, one finds themselves rendered unable to put it down without having eaten the whole thing. You start with a bite and think, 'OK, now I can put it away'. Hahahahahaha, yeah right. The next thing you know is it's gone. Not only are you depressed that it's gone, but you feel an overwhelming desire to go and buy some more. Thanks to Puerto Rico I have eaten 8 of the small bars and at least 6 of the big bars (roughly 450 cal a piece). Maniceros are an addiction - I think I'm going to need some rehab upon returning home and definitely some time at the gym!
