The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

And the animal is.....

With it being school holidays in Ecuador, GVI Amazon has shifted the location of its English lessons from Puerto Rico over to the community of Puerto Salazar for summer classes which is just a little bit further to walk down the road. Today’s lesson was on animals found in the community: cow, pig, horse, cat, dog, fish and chicken. The volunteers turned teachers for today were Ramzi, Jack, Steve and I (Louise) accompanied by Edwin the current GVI Amazon Scholar.

We had planned our lesson out the day before and collected our teaching resources so we arrived to Puerto Salazar ready to get straight into the lesson. The lesson was highly interactive and fun for both the kids and us volunteers. We spent much of the lesson drawing and acting out all the animals, complete with sound effects!

After the lesson, we took the kids outside for variations of the game “Duck, duck, goose” using the animals the kids had just learnt. This soon turned into free play between the kids and us which lasted until we had to leave. Both sides were sad to end out time together, but we will all look forward to our next English teaching session.
