The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Leadership BTEC project - Agua Santa!

For my second five weeks at GVI Amazon I decided to take part in a leadership BTEC. For my project we decided that it would be fun to head down to the weekly market at Agua Santa and build a GVI stall to share some information about the work GVI does with the local community members. The community is used to seeing us around, buying our weekly supplies of snacks, but we had never really been able to share with them what we do in a structured way.

So I was given a great team (Jenn, Mel, Lucy C, Helen and Cat) to run the project. We spent a week or so preparing props & posters to make our stall informative and fun! It was challenging, especially given that all our materials needed to be in Spanish of course, but the whole team pulled together really well and we were well prepared when we went down to Agua Santa on Saturday.

The day went really well, the community members were really interested and we all had a great time handing out leaflets and showing off some of our ID plates & mammal print moulds! It was a great learning experience for me as a team leader and a really fun way to spend a Saturday morning in the Amazon! Hopefully GVI will be able to continue opening this stall every so often, to keep the local community up to date with all the excellent work we are doing here at GVI Amazon!
