The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Lazy Motmots

Recent mist-netting sessions have provided the usual thrushes and manakins. Today however, threw up some of the bigger and less often caught birds including a Broad-billed Motmot (Electron platyrhynchum). He had a bright orange head, greeny-blue wings and tail feathers measuring almost 20cm in length. This motmot was only the second bird I had ever handled and I thought I’d have a wrestling match on my hands with this big bird. It turns out however, that motmots are very lazy birds and don’t mind being handled unlike the feisty little manakins which thrash around at any opportunity. Ringing and taking measurements from this big colourful bird was a very pleasant experience and one I will not forget in a hurry!
