The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Another New Species Discovery for the Yachana Reserve!

On a recent night-time streamwalk the GVI team made the fantastic discovery of a species of gecko, never before found on the Yachana Reserve.

The pair of Turnip-tailed Geckos (Thecadatylus rapicaudus) were found together; a promising sign that they are succeeding in the surrounding habitat. They are predominantly nocturnal, arboreal and can be found in both primary and secondary forest. Their greatly expanded toes and toe pads allow them to climb and cling to both rough and smooth surfaces with ease. As with other geckos they have the ability to drop their tails as a defense mechanism. A new tail will quickly begin to regenerate, although often appearing more bulbous than the first.

This is another great achievement for the GVI Amazon team who continually strive to keep the land as a protected reserve.
