The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Butterflies

Last Wednesday I went on the butterfly transects. During my time on GVI Amazon on butterfly surveys, I have learned how to properly hold them so as not to hurt them or damage their wings. I have also learned how to determine their sex. We found a beautiful Tigridia, a Caligo, and a couple of Nesseas. The Caligo decided to hang out on Becky’s face for close to an hour. We caught 16 butterflies in total, which we were extremely pleased with, however, we accidentally let two of them go before recording all the data we needed.

The transects are mildly challenging due to the steep slopes here in the Yachana Reserve, but it just made the day all the more fun and rewarding. I really enjoy the rough terrain here. On top of it all it was a beautiful, sunny day with not a drop of rain.

Everyone here is a lot of fun and easy to work with. Overall I’m having a wonderful experience in the Yachana reserve with GVI Amazon.
