The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

A Good Swamp

A few days ago, we went to a good amphibian and reptile VES (Visual Encounter Survey), survey in which you follow a straight line throught the forest looking for frogs and lizards. We found the usual bunch of Pristimantis kichwarum and Ameerega bilinguis, plus a couple of Pristimantis lanthanites, a cute female Amazon Forest Dragon (Enyaloides laticeps), and a few non-herpetological records, such as huge spiders, scorpions and a tiny mouse. After this we head back base, but we made a little stop in a small swamp just next to the road. In this swamp we have found uncommon frogs such as Dendropsophus bifurcus, D. rhodopepla, D. marmorata or Phyllomedusa vaillanti, so this place always worth a check to try to see any of these cool frogs. After looking for a bit Gemma caught a frog and I caught another individual of the same species. I had never seen that frog before, so we brought one to base, and after a bit of research we confirm that it was Dendropsophus sarayacuensis, that it was not In the species list, so it is a new little and beautiful tree frog species for the Yachana Reserve. Every place here has new things to discover!
