The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Puerto Rico comes to town...

This weekend GVI Amazon invited one of the local Rio Napo communities to come and spend some time at base camp – to meet all the volunteers, have a tour, some presentations and just some general good fun.

On Saturday, the community of Puerto Rico, where we teach English twice a week and also play football on Sundays, made a visit to the GVI base camp. A intern called Tom Harrison, earning his BTEC qualification in Team Leading, organized the visit. He prepared a presentation for the community about the Rio Napo and the effects of pollution, litter and deforestation on the river. Although we had sent an invitation to the whole community we had prepared ourselves for only ten people actually showing up, so we were all surprised when twenty five people showed!

The whole community enjoyed the presentation. After it was finished, a treasure hunt game had been organized for the children, the adults were offered hot drinks and jungle cookies were offered to all. Later, we all sat and talked while staff member Fraser ‘sunshine’ Ross brought out his guitar and the President of the community sang him a song. Overall, a great day!
