The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

CHALLENGE24: SNEAK PEAK #2!

Can you make a gourmet meal out of beetroot, porridge, onion, pineapple, rice and a plantain? Do you even know what a plantain IS?? Better start brushing up on your chef skills, cause the next challenge up is...

Ready..... Steady.... COOK!

That's right folks, sometime in the middle of our 24-hour challenge to raise money for rural education in the Amazon, the girls will take on the boys in the kitchen, racing to produce the tastiest, most elegant meal out of a very, well let's just call it "interesting" assortment of ingredients!

As you know by now, CHALLENGE24 aims to test the volunteers' (& staff's) training & practical experience on the many facets of life at camp and in the field. Volunteers on our Amazon expedition share cooking duties for the camp throughout their time with us, so all have had ample time to brush up on their sauteeing, fillet-ing and flambee-ing skills -- not to mention the creative "what in the world can I make with lentils, mayonnaise, apples & an eggplant?!" skills -- and now they'll get put to the test! For those lucky teams who may have already earned points on earlier challenges during the event, they can choose to hang on to those precious points, or trade them for extra ingredients and utensils to help ensure their dish is a success... a gamble, for sure, but winning the event could be worth it! Also, if teams manage to keep their raw egg safe during the [SPOILER ALERT!] egg challenge, and start a campfire and boil the egg during the fire challenge, then they'll have a hard-boiled egg advantage as well -- yum yum!

Also, a HUGE thank you to the talented & generous model, athlete & WWE champ Eve Torres, who is donating signed 8x10 photos to anyone donating over $20 -- see www.EveTorres.com for details. Thanks Eve!
