The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Challenge24 Complete!

We had an amazing 24 hour challenge this week, full of tough competitions of skill, endurance, and jungle wit. With the boys competing against the girls, the race was neck-to-neck, heated, and unpredictable to the very end.

The challenges included:

-An Emergency First Response challenge in which the teams had to correctly spinal-board a 'victim' and transport to the road
-A boil-an-egg challenge in which the teams had to create a fire from scratch (pretty difficult in a rainforest full of damp wood) and boil an egg.
-Build a raft challenge (mentioned in blog post below)
-Spear making and spear throwing
-Basket making (the men's team won and was able to carry a member of the girls team in their basket!)
-Create a mammal trap using items from the rainforest
-Find mammal footprints and create a wax mold
-Fashion challenge making entire (stylish) outfits from leaves, wood, and vines

The point totals for the teams at the end of the 24 hours came to over 1200 points each, and ended extremely close with a difference of only 16 points! The winner... the girls! Much to the men's dismay, the girls' stunning win in the rafting challenge and the amazing sweet-potato flatbread sealed the deal.

We cannot thank our supporters enough for all of the support we've received in this fundraising challenge. We will be able to provide a huge amount of resources for environmental education in the schools and communities we work with.

We also couldn't be more excited about the amount of money we've raised so far: $846 and £1,385.00!

We'll be using the money for in-class science experiments, bilingual science textbooks, educational posters, and more!

Once again, a huuuuge thank you from all of the GVI Amazon staff and volunteers, we can't wait to get our environmental education program started!
