The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Rainy Day Activity or Obsessive Competition?

Once upon a time, at the GVI Amazon rainforest base camp, there were five grown men, with very little to do on a rainy day. “What on earth can we do?” said Matt.
I know a card game called Yanif”, said Jon. And so the demise of their Amazon lives began. “I have an idea”, yelled Chris, “let’s have a bet to make it more exciting”.
Like what?” questioned Andy with caution in his voice.
Maybe the four losers could buy the winner a pizza in Tena”, suggested Guy.
They all agreed that the prize was a lovely idea and so the game begun… “Wait,” thought Jon aloud, “if we have a prize for the winner, we also need a forfeit for the loser.”
Go on…” said the others with interest.
Well, how about the loser gets the smallest, most tasteless piece of pizza possible at the meal in Tena?” They looked at each other in silence. They smiled and a dark shadow grew over camp.

Two weeks past and the game still continues… Positions have changed numerous times, but Chris is the one licking his lips at the prospect of a free large pizza, meant for a family of six. Guy and Jon however, rarely smile these days, as they close in on two pieces of dry margarita meant for a baby hamster. How will it end with just a week to go? Who will live happily ever after? And who will fall into the depths of darkness?
