The End of an Era

After over 6 years of intensive research and community development work in and around the Yachana Reserve, GVI Amazon is coming to a close. We have finished our final research project (look forward to our Road Effects paper, coming soon!) and are handing over the project to our partner, The Yachana Foundation. They will continue to maintain and monitor the reserve, using it as an hands-on science education center for students -- we're very excited to see what fabulous things this next generation of scientists find! For more detail on GVI Amazon's closure, and our accomplishments over the years, please read on...

Hidden Treasures - Mapping the Unknown

I have had many great experiences over the past few weeks and have created wonderful memories to take home with me - one that springs to mind is marking unmapped areas of the Yachana Reserve using a GPS. The day involved walking off trail, discovering new parts of the reserve – which can be difficult. However I found it a thoroughly rewarding experience as we stumbled across a stream and small waterfall hidden away by a large tree fall. The tree fall created a hole in the canopy which allowed in dappled sunlight making for a magical scene. This, along with a few amphibian sightings, and minimal slips and slides on my part, (jungle legs still developing!), made for an excellent day!
