Rio Bueno community visit
One of the local communities, Rio Bueno, was invited to visit us at base camp last Sunday. Olly and I were placed in charge of organizing the morning’s entertainment. The main aim was to tell them about why a bunch of ‘gringos’ are living in their forest and teaching their children. Our designated team worked hard all week preparing posters, translating into Spanish, making jungle cookies and re-building steps. Two hours after intended, around 30 men, women and children arrived looking almost as nervous as we did! We started with a stutter welcome presentation delivered in…a good attempt at Spanish by the whole group. We wanted to show them some of the work we do here. They amused themselves climbing into wobbly jungle hammocks at our mock sat camp, laughed at Andy falling into a pit fall trap dressed as a frog and made wax handprints at out sand padding demonstration. It was great to build on our relationship with the community and as a result, we have been invited to return the visit on Friday. It was a really fun day and hopefully this is only the start!
